Giants linebacker arrested with knife in luggage, police say

Giants place Arias on DL with appendicitis

Connor was charged with posession of an offensive weapon after the switchblade showed up in an X-ray Saturday morning, Philadelphia Police spokeswoman Christine O’Brien told CNN. Transportation Security Administration screeners called in Philadelphia police, and Connor was taken into custody, O’Brien said. He was released on his own recognizance after being processed and arraigned, she said. The Giants signed Connor as a free agent in the spring after he spent a year with the Dallas Cowboys. The Charlotte, North Carolina, resident played four seasons for the Carolina Panthers before joining the Cowboys. “We’re aware of the situation and we spoke to Dan yesterday and we are cooperating with authorities,” Giants spokesman Peter John Baptiste said in a written statement. Federal authorities banned knives aboard aircraft after the September 11, 2001 al Qaeda attacks on New York and Washington. A proposal by TSA chief John Pistole to loosen that ban to allow knives smaller than 2.36 inches failed in June after fierce criticism from airlines, unions and Congress.

We’ll see how this plays out. LB Jake Muasau Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports Dan Connor’s arrest and Muasau’s shooting stock give the second-year player a chance to survive the last cut. The Giants loved him last preseason before he was relegated to the practice squad, and with the middle linebacker situation far from resolved, perhaps Muasau gets a chance. The G-Men desperately need a middle linebacker to step up (well, a strong-side, too…and a weak-side). Muasau needs another big summer. He is eligible for the practice squad again. CB Laron Scott Rich Schultz/Getty Images Remember his pick against the Pats last summer? Scott has a ton of corners to get past, but people seem to love the guy.

Buster Posey went 5-for-8 with two doubles and a two-run homer for the Giants, who went 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left 18 men on base. “This is as frustrating a game as we’ve had,” said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. Hoping to add to the Giants’ recent woes will be righty Dillon Gee, who is 6-7 with a 4.45 ERA. Gee did not get a decision on Thursday against Arizona, but pitched well, as he surrendered two runs and six hits in seven innings of his team’s 5-4 loss. Gee has faced the Giants three times (1 start) and is 0-1 against them with a 6.75 ERA. San Francisco, meanwhile, will turn to lefty Barry Zito, who is winless in his last six starts. Zito did not get a decision Official Eli Manning Jersey in his team’s loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday, but gave up just a run and seven hits in four-plus innings of work. He is 4-6 on the year with a 4.44 ERA, but hasn’t won since beating Oakland back on May 30.

Cruz, Giants agree on long-term deal

The Giants confirmed Monday that the Pro Bowl wideout has signed a multi-year extension, which FoxSports.com initially reported to be for five years and $43 million and will run through the 2018 season. Cruz was already under contract for 2013 at a $2.879 million salary, the highest possible tender allowed for a restricted free agent player. Counting this season’s commitment, the entire deal will contain $15.6 million worth of guaranteed money. According to NFL.com, Cruz ultimately accepted an offer from the Giants that had been on the table since he signed his RFA tender back on June 14. “We are pleased to have this behind us,” Giants general manager Jerry Reese said. “Now Victor can focus on football.” The former undrafted free agent is coming off a pair of outstanding seasons. After spending his entire rookie campaign on injured reserve in 2010, Cruz set a franchise single-season record by racking up 1,536 receiving yards along with nine touchdowns on 82 catches during New York’s Super Bowl XLVI championship run the following year.

The Royals will be responsible for nearly all of the remainder of his $6.75 million salary, with the Giants paying him only a pro-rated portion of the major-league minimum. The Giants, losers of 17 of their past 22 games, wanted to add a right-handed hitting outfielder; center fielder Angel Pagan , a switch-hitter, recently underwent surgery on his left hamstring and could miss the rest of the season. Francoeur is a right fielder, but the Giants figure to use him in a platoon with Andres Torres , a switch-hitter, in left. Hunter Pence plays right for the Giants, and the team has been mostly using Gregor Blanco in center. Francoeur, who has made only two career appearances in left, both with the Rangers in 2010, could take the roster spot of Cole Gillespie , who was promoted last Friday. Francoeur batted .208 with a .571 OPS in 193 plate appearances for the Royals, a sharp dropoff from his career numbers entering the season .264 and .735. The Giants will be his fifth team.

Mets, Giants get back to work at AT&T Park

The Giants placed infielder Joaquin Arias on the 15-day disabled list Monday with appendicitis. Nick Noonan was recalled from Triple-A Fresno to fill Arias’ spot before San Francisco opened a three-game series against the New York Mets. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Arias had an emergency appendectomy after becoming ill Sunday night. Arias will be out at least two weeks, he said. Arias also had strained his hamstring at Dodger Stadium on June 24 and missed the next eight games before returning last week. San Francisco had lost 11 of 13 entering Monday night’s game. “It’s tough news again,” Bochy said. “Really feel for him. He was swinging the bat well.
